Mental Health Harms of Pediatric Gender Affirming Care (CSocD64 Side Event).

Image
Side event of the 64th Commission for Social Development on Mental Health Harms of Pediatric Gender Affirming Care. Panelists will analyze emerging medical research which reveals that for minors with gender dysphoria, gender-affirming care does not significantly improve mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety or suicide ideation and instead carries significant risks of irreversible harm, including psychiatric disorders, infertility, and sexual dysfunction. Panelists will also explore the internal dynamics of medical associations that lead them away from evidence-based treatment recommendations, highlight the evolving legislative landscape in the U.S. and abroad, and examine the relevance of U.N. documents designed to protect the well being of children and families and advance social development. Mental health and psychosocial support are essential.

During crises, nearly everyone experiences distress and social disruption . Homes are lost, families are separated, and communities are fractured. While one in five people may have a mental health condition , nearly everyone affected experiences emotional distress and disrupted community ties . These impacts often remain long after physical safety is restored, undermining recovery and resilience. People with significant mental health conditions must not be left without care and support. Continuity of care is a priority during and following any emergency .
